List Dojo: First Tournament

Tomorrow is my first real tournament of Mk3 (there’ve been a couple scramblers and stuff but they don’t count), so I decided it was probably time to actually make some lists to play.  Might be a big mistake but we’ll see.

I wrestled with whether or not to pair Stryker2 or Kara with Haley2 (because let’s be honest… Haley2 is never not going to be one of the pair); both can play into gunlines; Stryker stacks some reasonable armor and speed to close distance and Kara just kills them.  Unfortunately for my favorite dudeguy, actually killing opposing gunlines tends to be more effective than running at them screaming and waving sticks, so Kara it was.  She also scares a lot of people and that amuses me.

So what are the lists?  I’ve been wrestling with them for a while and while I’m still not super happy with how they turned out I’ve learned to live with crippling inadequacy; with any luck they won’t lose me too many games and I can make them better in the future.  Or, with any luck a far superior pair is presented to me as a token of affection by an ethereal Gary Busey in a fever dream and I change my lists the morning of the tournament.  Until then, here they are:

Haley's Heroes Season 2

Major Victoria Haley (+25)
*Stormclad (-18)
*Dynamo (-18)
*Thorn (-13)
*Squire (-5)
Arcane Tempest Rifleman (-4)
Arcane Tempest Rifleman (-4)
Gun Mage Captain Adept (-5)
Journeyman Warcaster (-4)
*Firefly (-8)
Ragman (-4)
Alten Ashley (-5)
Gobber Tinker (-2)
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team (-10)

This one is a bit of an all-rounder; as long as it doesn’t play into heavy gunlines or mass immunity to Electricity that make Dynamo sad it will probably have a game.  In general the game plan is going to be to use Dominate+TK and long range guns to isolating opposing heavies and gun them down one-by-one.  Vs. fast Warjacks it’s possible to get one relatively for free by pulling it 6-8” away from the frontlines so Haley can save Shift for when the Stormclad has to get down an’ dirty.  Magelock Rifles and B13 fight infantry and stuff.
Ideally I’d like AnH in the list to add some additional armor cracking, but we’ll see how this version plays.

The pair is Kara Sloan with a classic gunline.  Not particularly exciting stuff, to be honest.

Double Trouble

Captain Kara Sloan (+28)
*Defender (-16)
*Defender (-16)
*Hunter (-11)
*Hunter (-11)
*Cyclone (-13)
*Cyclone (-13)
*Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator (-4)
Captain Arlan Strangeways (-4)
Journeyman Warcaster (-4)
*Sentinel (-8)
Anastasia di Bray (-3)

Look, ‘jacks with guns… cool…
I guess the only odd parts of the list are the Cyclones and Annie.  Cyclones are incredible with Guided Fire and Fire Group available; mostly they just lawnmower infantry and sit in zones.  At 13 points they’re cheap enough to be ablative armor for the rest of the battlegroup.  They’re also no slouches in melee at MAT 7 w/ 2 fists for throwing and on top of that, 2D3 POW 12 gunshots is SUPER dangerous for a lot of ‘casters and with a 20” threat range plenty of folks have to be worried about their assassination potential.  All in all, a great deal for super cheap.
Anastasia di Bray is in there because she’s great, threatens the sides of the table, can contest deep scenario elements and help you go first.  Kara going first or choosing the better table side can be super powerful for only 3 points.

Anyhoo, there are the lists.  If you want to see how they play, I’ll be live posting tomorrow as much as I can on the Facebook Page and my Twitter page!

  1. So now that you've played your games with these lists what changes would you make if any?

    1. I think the Kara list is going to move to a Stormwall build; it loses a lot of raw power and assassination potential for much more resilience and a big threat to enemies who are worried about magic attacks (4-6 magic gunshots coming downrange from Kara and a SW are enough to scare a lot of lists).

Probably something like; SW, 2x Cyclones, Hunter, Reinholdt, Ragman, Min Field Meks, Arlan, Junior+Sentinel

  3. Is the Gun such a huge difference over say using Ol'Rowdy , I love my stormclads with stormknights but I rarely use them outside of those situations I generally choose ol'rowdy instead.

    Just curious.

    1. Yep; +1" melee range, +1 POW and e-leap are all pretty relevant.
